SMITH BROTHERS RACING hooking up at the ''Rock'' with parts purchased here at HOLCOMB! Thanks Will!
ROCKINGHAM – J.R. Webb of St. Albans, West Va., Kenny Floyd of Charlotte and Howard Brewer of Bennett claimed individual titles Sunday before a car fire abruptly ended the 17th annual Holcomb Motorsports Outlaw Civil Wars drag race at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

In the second semifinal race in the Pro Tree Door class, Stanley’s Charles Wright drifted to the left and then abruptly turned right, head on into
the right guard wall, just before the the eighth-mile finish line then careened into the leftside guardwall and caught fire. Wright was extricated by fire and rescue and transported via life flight helicopter to
the burn center in Chapel Hill where he was treated and released. Wright suffered three blistered toes on his left foot, a contusion on his left leg and possible bruised ribs.
Because residue left by fire suppressant chemicals compromised the track surface, racers who had advanced to the final round or the semifinal round in seven other categories agreed to split the purse.

Before the accident, Webb won the Outlaw 10.5 title, Floyd claimed the 6.0 Index crown and Bennett won in the 7.0 Index class. Ironically, Bennett would have opposed Wright in the Pro Tree Doorslammer class with an opportunity to become the weekend’s only double-up winner.

Sanford’s Derrick Sercy and New Bern’s Jason Tyson had reached the final in the Outlaw 275 class while Bob Kurgan of Braselton, Ga., and Davidson’s Barry Mitchell had done the same in X275. Concord’s Ziff Hudson and Jason Smith of Lexington, S.C., split the winner and runner-up money in the King of the Street class and Matthew Lawrence of Richmond, Va., and Clayton’s John Phillips did the same in Real Street 275.

“I know everyone was disappointed that we couldn’t finish the race,” Earwood said, “but we had a situation with the chemicals used to fight the fire and we just didn’t feel like we could put the track in competitive condition in the short timeframe that we had. I want to thank all the racers for working with us on this issue. We love racing but only if we can do it safely.”

 2012 SPRING Race Recap:
Dean Marinis used a .078 starting line advantage to offset Barry Mitchell’s slight edge in on-track performance Sunday and win the
Baer Brakes X275 Shootout  at the 17th annual Holcomb Spring Civil Wars at Rockingham Dragway.

In a showdown between the No. 1 and No. 2 qualifiers, Marinis drove his 2000 Ford Mustang through the eighth-mile timers in 4.817 seconds at 153.16 mph to beat Mitchell’s slightly quicker 4.798 at 154.69 mph for the featured  Baer X275 Drag Radial title.

Other winners included Tony Ridenour of Largo, Fla., who beat many- time Rockingham winner Keith Szabo of Gainesville, Ga., in Outlaw Drag Radial;
Bill Kistler’s 88 Mustang out  of Lincolnton NC in
AUTOS BY NELSON.COM SR275 Drag Radial outran Trent George’s 2002 Camaro of Middletown Va .

Racecraft,Mac Fab, PTC Convertors and DPC Construction.
John Phillips ,Clayton NC 90 Mustang took the win in
ULTIMATE CONVERTORS Real Street 275 over Brad Schehr, Ft Myers Fl....5.45 to a losing 5.59

Brandon Williams of Eagle Springs, Charlotte’s Kenny Floyd and Todd Robinson of Cherryville split the 6.0 and 7.0 Index titles and Michael Presnall won the
PERFORMANCE AUTOMATIC Open Comp class on Saturday with Travis Frazier taking home the gold in Sunday’s Open Comp Race.
Other winners included Nick Womack in
DYNAMIC TRANSMISSIONS Pro Tree Doorslammers and Robert Holton in Footbrake on Sunday
Shane Williams took no prisoners in winning the Saturday Pro Tree Doorslammers and Jonathan Wiggins won in Saturday’s Footbrake contest.

Although Marinis drove his Whitestone, N.Y.-based Mustang to the No. 1 qualifying position at 4.811 seconds, Mitchell was close behind in his Davidson-based 1989 Mustang at 4.820. Mitchell saved the best run of the weekend for the final but wasted it with a .129 of a second reaction time (to Marinis’s .051).

In Outlaw Drag Radial vs True Ten Five , No. 1 qualifier Steve Jackson,  of Martinez, Ga., whose best time  of 4.407 reset the track record was upset in the semifinals by Szabo who then lost to Ridenour when his 1993 Mustang suffered mechanical problems and slowed to 8.218 seconds.

Despite a steady rain Saturday Morning, the weekend saw a field of  over 450 entries blast down the Rock 1/8 mile. Thanks to the Track crew and VP for providing an awesome racetrack all weekend.
Other Sponsors of   OCW17 included Aerospace Brakes, AED Carbs, Automatic Transmission  Factory (ATF),Mickey Thompson and Salvato Designs.

The 2012 debut of Blake Holcomb’s Vortech X105 Powered 85 Mustang came to a 60 ft halt when the awesome power of the huge Vortech blower took out the Rear Axle on  the first pass.  Thanks to the crew of Speed 365 for getting the car ready to run at the Rock!!  This will be one wicked Stang when the crew gets the bugs worked out!
