Monroe's Kirk Claims $7,500 Top Prize at Fast Fords in the Fall

ROCKINGHAM - Monroe's Steve Kirk Jr. survived a second round scare against Mike Hill of Washington, Ga., and went on to win the $7,500 top prize in the Flowmaster Super Street Shootout portion of Sunday's eighth annual Holcomb Motorsports "Fast Fords in the Fall" event at Rockingham Dragway.

Kirk, the No. 4 qualifier in a field of 28, beat Keith Szabo of Gainesville, Ga., in the final round. Kirk covered the eighth mile course in 4.791 seconds at 154.30 miles per hour. Szabo trailed at 4.860, 150.25 mph.

Other winners in the two-day event included Scott Turner of Concord in the S.C.C.A. Outlaw Pure Street class; Dan Jaynes of Charlotte in the Carolina Renegade class; Randy Haywood of Willow Springs in Wild Street; and Tim Hoddleston of Rock Hill, S.C., in Limited Street.

Perhaps the most impressive single run of the event, however, was that made by the diesel-powered Ford F-250 truck of Jess Spruill of Plymouth. In winning the Flowmaster Power Stroke class for diesel trucks, Spruill covered Rockingham's quarter mile course in 12.975 seconds at 105.92 mph.

Kirk, the only Super Street driver to break the 4.80 second barrier in eliminations, used quick time of the event (4.782 seconds) to win the closest race of the day. Hill had gotten off to a .023 of a second lead at the start before Kirk ran him down to win by that very same margin.

Low qualifier Terry Robbins of Henrietta was upset in the second round by Sambo Price of Mt. Holly, who used a .062 of a second starting line to offset Robbins' .036 of a second advantage in eighth-mile performance (4.963-4.996).

The No. 2 and No. 3 qualifiers also made early exits. Cameron Jurow of Charleston, S.C., was victimized in round two by Truman Wright of Atlanta and Atlanta's Rob Hale survived just one round longer before being sent home by Lawndale's Stacy McIntyre.
