KIRK WINS $10,000 TOP PRIZE
IN HOLCOMB FALL CIVIL WARS RACE
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Claremont's Mike Chandley drove his 1993 Chevrolet Camaro the quickest eighth mile in the history of Flowmaster Super Street drag racing, but it was steady Steve Kirk Jr. of Monroe, Ga., who came away with the $10,000 top prize in Sunday's ninth annual Holcomb Fall Civil Wars event at Rockingham Dragway.
Kirk, whose 4.810 second qualifying time placed him only 14th in the field, averaged 4.689 seconds for five competitive runs Sunday including a best of 4.674 that took out Chandley in the second round.Ï He beat No. 2 qualifier Brad Brand of Loganville, Ga., in the final. Other winners included Dean Lewis of Concord in the Southern Street Car Association Outlaw Pure Street class; Keith Szabo of Gainesville, Ga., in Wild Street; Steve Gerard of Chorowinity in Hot Street; and Chris Bragg of Boiling Springs in Real Street.
Gary Sanders of Eagle Springs was the winner in the Lumberton Ford Trophy Street class and Alvin Brewer of Shannon prevailed in the Pro Tree Bracket class.
Lewis won from the No. 7 qualifying position in Outlaw Pure Street, beating series champion Richie Kibler of Garner in the final round after disposing of No. 1 qualifier Darrin Hoyle of Hickory in the very first round. Hoyle set a class record during qualifying when he pushed his 1969 Camaro through the timers in 5.172 seconds.
