2006 SPRING FAST FORDS AT ROCKINGHAM DRAGWAY

MARCH 18, 2006

For Immediate Release
SANDERS BEATS SANDERS EN ROUTE TO ROCKINGHAM OPEN COMP TITLE

ROCKINGHAM – Youth was served Saturday and Rockingham Dragway where Dale Sanders, the son, beat Dale Sanders, the father, in the Open Comp semifinals before dispatching Rockingham’s Will McKay in the final round of the Holcomb Motorsports’ Fast Fords spring championship at Rockingham Dragway.

Sanders, driving the family’s 1991 Ford Mustang, won a double-breakout battle with his dad, driving a 1992 Mustang, to determine who would race in the final.

In the money round, it was the same scenario with both drivers running under their respective target numbers. In such instances, the winner is the driver who is least under his target. Sanders ran .050 under while McKay was .126 under in his 1985 Ford Thunderbird.

Despite the Open Comp loss, McKay came back to win the Pro Tree Doorslammers title, beating Howard Brewer in the final round. Other winners were Monroe’s Phillip Tarlton, who claimed the Wild Fords title over John Phillips, and Ron Williams of Eagle Springs, who prevailed in Trophy/Street.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2005

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Williamston’s Al Leggett drove his 2002 Ford Mustang past the 1992 Mustang of Sanford’s Derrick Sercy to win the Wild Fords title at the annual Holcomb Motorsports Fast Fords in the Fall event at Rockingham Dragway.

ULSCH ENDS GEORGIA DOMINATION OF CIVIL WARS OUTLAW 10.5 CLASS

ROCKINGHAM – Chuck Ulsch of Clarksville, Md., ended the Georgia domination of the Holcomb Motorsports Civil Wars series Sunday at Rockingham Dragway, beating Steve Kirk Jr. of Monroe, Ga., in the final round to win the Outlaw 10.5 championship and a $10,500 top prize.
The No. 4 qualifier, Ulsch saved his best for the final, driving his Fulton Performance-powered 1969 Camaro through the eighth mile timers in 4.544 seconds.
Kirk, last fall’s $10,000 Civil Wars winner and the No. 2 qualifier for Sunday’s race, trailed at 4.616, 160.58 mph in his late model (2000) Camaro.
The weekend ended way too early for defending Outlaw champion Marcus Birt of Gray, Ga., who, after qualifying his 1997 Camaro in the middle of the pack (No. 9) failed to answer the first round call.

Ulsch was the standout in a field as diverse as any ever assembled. While there were numerous Camaro and Ford Mustang configurations, the field also included a 1954 Studebaker driven by Mike Chandley of Claremont; a late model Corvette driven by former NHRA Pro Stock and Pro Stock Truck driver Taylor Laster; the 1966 Chevy II of Richard Sexton; and a 2000 Pontiac Firebird that Cameron Jurow drove the fastest speed in Outlaw 10.5 history – 164.41 mph during qualifying and 164.09 mph during eliminations.

Other winners in the weekend event included John Brady of McMinnville, Tenn., in Open Comp; Hickory’s Darrin Hoyle, who won a third straight Limited Street title with his 1969 Camaro; Daniel Phillips, who drove a 1988 Mustang to the Real street championship; Blaney Taylor Jr, the winner in the 6.0 Index class; and Jerry Cline, the winner in the 7.0 Index category.
