RAMSEY LEADS QUALIFYING IN HOLCOMB 5.0 CIVIL WARS RACE AT THE ROCK
Rockingham, NC - Dennis Ramsey on Saturday became THE QUICKEST 5.0 IN THE COUNTRY when he drove his Mustang to a time of 7.971 seconds at 179.89 miles per hour to claim the No. 1 qualifying spot for Sunday's Holcomb Motorsports 5.0 Civil Wars at Rockingham Dragway.
The Tampa, FL driver was substantially quicker than anyone else in the field although two other Floridians -- Jimmy Keen of Palmetto and Matt Scranton of Tampa -- were among the top four in qualifying for eliminations beginning at 1 pm Sunday. Les Baer Sr. of Hillside, IL, prevented a Southern sweep of the top spots by driving his Mustang to the No. 3 position at 8.184 seconds, 174.01 mph .
Among the champions crowned during Saturday's first day were Alvin Brewer of Lumberton, who drove his dragster to a Pro ET victory in the Gamblers Race; Kevin Davis, who prevailed in the Comp Cams Street Wars event when final round foe Lance Styck of Americus, GA, suffered a mechanical failure; and Michael Sanders of Lenoir, who doubled up as the champion in both the Gamblers Footbrake class and the Open Comp class.
Sanders, driving an '86 Ford Mustang, beat Bill Puffenarger of Staunton, VA for the Gamblers Footbrake title, then drove the same car to a final round win over Stanley Jordan of Cassatt, SC, for the Open Comp title.

Baer upsets Keen for 5.0 Civil Wars Title at Rockingham Dragway
Rockingham, NC - Les Baer Jr. of Hillsdale, IL gave North its first victory in three years Sunday when he drove his Mustang to upsets of Floridians Dennis Ramsey and Jimmy Keen in the feature event at the third annual Holcomb Motorsports 5.0 Civil Wars at Rockingham Dragway.
Bear, the No.3 qualifer in the heads-up 5.0 class, beat top qualifier Ramsey of Tampa, FL, in the semifinals and then got past Keen, the No.2 qualifier from Palmetto, FL in a final round showdown between high performance Ford Mustangs.
Baer used his best quarter mile time of the weekend (8.066 seconds at 177.24 miles per hour) to earn a narrow .030 victory over Ramsey, who during qualifying, set a record low ET of 7.971 @ 179.89 MPH. In the final, Baer's 8.106 @ 177.30 MPH was good enough for the title.
Despite his semifinal loss, Ramsey left the event with track records for time (7.971 seconds) and speed (179.89 MPH) and the cash bonuses posted for each.
Other winners in the all- Ford event presented by Sanford Ford-Lincoin/Mercury included Stanley Jordan of Cassatt, SC in open Comp; Richard Puser of Monroe in Aman of Mt. Olive in the Sanford Ford 5.0 Trophy class, Raleigh's Steve Taylor, who beat the best of the Fords to win the Gamblers Footbrake title; and Russ Richardson of Angier in the Comp Cams Street Wars event.
